What are Demolition Cables
Demolition cables, or detonator firing cables, are a specialised type of wire used in explosive demolition and detonation tasks, particularly for connecting detonators to a firing system. It transmits electrical signals from the firing device to the explosive charges, triggering the detonation process. It is purpose-built for the extreme reliability, safety, and operational flexibility required in detonator firing circuits.

Demolition cables include key characteristics:
- Conductor material made from non-magnetic materials
- Twisted pair design to help reduce electromagnetic interference
- Sheath and insulation for protection
They’re used in a variety of applications in scenarios where precise control over explosive charges is crucial.
Our varied stock of demolition cables offers a broad range of specialised design and performance features, including:
- Non-magnetic conductor construction
- Twisted pair for noise reduction
- High tensile strength / abrasion resistance
- Flexible in cold and hot conditions
- Meets DEF 61-12 PT 17
- Available in multiple sizes / configurations
- Suitable for military + commercial demolition uses
- Strong insulation for harsh environments
Technical Specifications
Key Specifications
- Voltage rating: 300/500 V
- Insulation: PVC (standard) or ETFE (lightweight)
- Jacket type: None (insulated twisted cores only)
- Temperature range: Suitable for extreme conditions
Benefits of Demolition Cables
Each variant has its own distinct conductor size, number of strands, flexibility, and resistance. 0.22 mm² is lightweight and portable with higher resistance, making it suitable for short-distance runs, 0.5 mm² offers moderate flexibility and conductivity, making it a balanced option for medium-distance runs, and 0.75 mm² has the lowest resistance, highest current capacity, and is suited to longer runs.
- Engineered from high-quality, non-conductive materials, demolition cables ensure maximum safety by minimising the risks of accidental detonation.
- Designed for demanding explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) and demolition tasks, this cable delivers consistent, quick signal transfer to ensure reliable performance.
- With high tensile strength and low resistance, demolition cable offers precise explosive placement and ignition.
- Our demolition cable is weather, abrasion, and temperature-resistant and is built to withstand extreme conditions in indoor and outdoor settings.
- Versatile application. Demolition cable is suitable for EOD, demining, construction, and controlled demolition.
- Compliance and quality assurance. Our demolition cable is thoroughly tested and compliant with industry standards.
Conductor Material and Strand Count
Our conductors are made from non-magnetic, stranded copper wires. The conductor’s strand count differs between the variants:
- 22 mm²: 7 strands
- 5 mm²: 16 strands
- 75 mm²: 24 strands
Compliance and Safety
DEF 61-12 Part 17 is the UK Ministry of Defence Standard covering cables, special purpose, and electrical (for detonator firing circuits). It sets out stringent requirements for the design, manufacture, and testing of cables used in explosive applications, ensuring cables meet high safety and performance criteria. In particular, it specifies the conductor materials, strand configuration, insulation, sheath, mechanical performance, and electrical properties to ensure the cables are safe, durable, and reliable under demanding conditions.
Cables manufactured to DEF 61-12 Part 17 provide a number of safety benefits including non-magnetic conductors, twisted pairs to reduce any signal interference, and robust insulation for high durability, ensuring safe and reliable performance in demanding explosive operations.
